Musings on the A9
I stopped as usual at the Ballinluig Motor Grill last Friday for my sausage, egg and chips with a mug of tea, and the rather substantial portions cost less than a portion of tea and cake at House of Bruar. The food is simple but good, I love the way everyone is friendly, and you can have a very pleasant conversation about the merits of the five different routes to Elgin with anyone. Don’t even bother trying to stop anywhere else, unless you take your own sandwiches to The Hermitage - a little slice of Middle Earth.
.
The A9 has a symbolic value - it has always been a journey of the soul and spirit as well as the physical for me. It has always connected family to family, and I’ve been travelling it since before I was born. It can be very beautiful -when the sun is out. I am not a huge rain fan.

Heritage Falls is indeed a very beautiful place, used extensively by walker’s kayakers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Unfortunately, NPower have decided that they want to build a hydro-electric plant just upstream from this area which will descimate the river flow. Both Hermitage and the powerfully expressive Rumbling Bridge Falls will be reduced to trickles for what, relatively, amounts to a tiny production of electricity.
I’d urge anyone who’d like to continue enjoying this area in its full beauty and safety to write to their MSP and ask them to consider the impact this development would have on a wonderful area.

Wow, I had no idea - in general I’m all for hydro power, but here it seems that you have so much to lose that the plans just aren’t worth it.

As a previous inhabitant of Blair Atholl, can I just point out that if you’re taking up Heather’s recommendation (which I heartily agree with by the way), PLEASE be careful at the turn-off to Ballinluig, as it has a REALLY high accident rate (weird road markings…)
